Seed rate calculator

Type the seed rate FROM THE PACKET TAG or your package of practices, and your field size — we do the arithmetic: how much seed, how many packets, and what germination below standard costs you in extra seed. The tag always wins; if the tag and an advisory differ, ask your agri officer.

Indicative only. Germination on a tag is valid until the date printed beside it — an expired lot needs a fresh test, not a bigger rate. Sowing extra seed does not fix bad seed.

What the tag colour means

Every class below is legal. They are not the same thing, and the price gap between them is exactly that difference.

Before you buy a packet · Before you sow anything

🏷️ Before you buy a packet

  • Buy from a licensed seed dealer — look for the Lic. number on the card
  • Bill with the lot number on it — match the lot against the tag
  • Germination % and the valid-until date beside it — an expired date means an untested lot
  • Sealed bag with the certification tag still attached, not re-stitched
  • Loose seed sold by weight from an open sack — no tag, no lot, no recourse
  • A price far under the market for the same variety — the commonest fake-seed hook

🌱 Before you sow — packet or farm-saved

  • Do a 100-seed germination test at home — wet cloth, 7 days, count what sprouts
  • Adjust your rate to the tag's germination, not the standard — the calculator above does it
  • Treat the seed if the tag says untreated — Trichoderma or Rhizobium as your AO advises
  • Keep the bill, the tag and a handful of seed until harvest — that is your only evidence in a claim
⚠️ Chemically treated seed is dyed (usually red or pink) because it is POISON. Never eat it, never feed it to animals, never mill it, and never store it with grain. If a bag arrives untagged or the germination fails, complain to the Seed Inspector at your block Agriculture office and to the Kisan Call Centre 1800-180-1551 — with the bill and the tag.

Buying seed in Coimbatore — what to check before you pay

Choose the variety before you choose the shop: your block Agricultural Officer, the KVK and the state seed corporation know which duration suits your sowing date, your water and your soil card, and that advice costs nothing. Once you know the variety, the packet has to prove itself — under the Seeds Act every bag carries a certification tag whose colour tells you the class, plus a lot number, a germination percentage and the date that germination figure stops being valid. Azure blue means the state agency inspected the field and tested the lot; opal green means the producer said so themselves. Both are legal, they are not the same thing, and the price gap between them is exactly that difference. Insist on a bill that carries the lot number, keep the tag and a handful of seed until harvest, and run a hundred-seed test on a wet cloth before you commit an acre — germination on paper is only as good as the storage since the test. Treated seed is dyed because it is poison: never eat it or feed it. Prices here are as published for the pack size shown, with the source and the date it was read on every row. agri.in lists packets and seed dealers, and connects you directly — we never sell, never recommend a variety and never add commission.

Common questions

What do the seed packet tag colours mean?
The colour is the class. Azure blue is certified seed: the state certification agency inspected the seed field and tested the lot. Opal green is truthfully labelled: the producer states the class themselves, with no agency test. Golden is breeder seed and white is foundation seed — both are for seed production, not for sowing a crop. All of them are legal; they are not the same thing, and the price difference between them is exactly that difference.
What germination percentage should I accept?
The Seeds Rules set a minimum germination standard per crop — 80% for paddy, 70% for tomato and brinjal, 65% for cotton and okra, 60% for chilli. Cards here show that standard with the source it was read from. The figure printed on a packet's own tag applies only until the valid-until date beside it; after that the lot has to be retested. Never buy a packet whose valid-until date has passed, whatever the discount, and run a 100-seed test on a wet cloth before you commit an acre.
Can I sell seed I saved from my own harvest?
Yes. Section 39 of the Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers' Rights Act 2001 protects your right to save, use, sow, resow, exchange, share and sell farm-saved seed from your own crop. What you may not do is sell it as BRANDED seed — packaged and labelled under a registered variety name — which needs a licence under the Seeds (Control) Order. That is why farmer listings on agri.in carry no brand name, carry no germination claim unless the seller has a test they can date, and are always marked farm-saved.
Why is the cotton seed price the same at every shop?
Because it is not the shop's price to set. Bt cotton packet prices are notified by the Centre each season under the Cotton Seeds Price (Control) Order and apply nationally, so a cotton card here shows the notified figure and the date of the order rather than a dealer's MRP. A shop charging above the notified price is breaking the order, and the Seed Inspector at your block Agriculture office is who you tell.
Does agri.in sell seed or recommend a variety?
No, and no. agri.in lists packets with the facts printed on their tag or published in an official price list — class, germination standard, pack, price — plus seed dealers, and connects you directly, free and with no commission. We never sell and never recommend a variety: which variety suits your soil, season and water comes from your Agricultural Officer, KVK or the state seed corporation, and that advice is free. Sponsored placements are always labelled.
